Lift: The Portable and Adaptable Shelf

Designed by Shiva Pouryousef Khameneh

Inspired by adaptability, Lift is a unique shelving system that maximizes space utilization and minimizes material usage. With the ability to be supported by any wall, Lift breaks away from traditional freestanding shelves and offers a versatile solution for displaying books and magazines.

Lift is not your ordinary shelf. It is a dependent product that tailors itself to the available space, making it a truly adaptable and portable piece of furniture. The design philosophy behind Lift is to avoid unnecessary ornamentation and reduce the number of components, resulting in a product that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.

One of the standout features of Lift is its use of metal trays for standing books and copper bars for hanging magazines. These elements, combined with the ability to adjust the shelf height, provide a customizable and visually appealing display. By utilizing walls as support, Lift eliminates the need for additional materials and components, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

The realization of Lift involves a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The initial design is sketched and analyzed, taking into consideration average human size. Models are then created using Rhino, a 3D modeling software, and production planning and shop drawings are done using AutoCAD. The wooden frames and bottom tray are made from 18 mm plywood, cut using a CNC machine. The metal trays are made from steel, also cut using a CNC machine, and hand-painted in multiple layers. The book supports are hand-turned from beech wood, and the magazine holders are made from 8 mm metal profiles with a copper-like finish. The final product weighs 23 kg and can be easily carried by one person.

With dimensions of 2000 mm in height and 600 mm in width, Lift can be positioned a maximum distance of 400 mm from any wall at the bottom. Its compact size allows it to fit in a 210 cm x 70 cm box, making it easy to transport and assemble.

Lift's design journey began in May 2017 in New York, with the technical drawings and prototype edition completed in July 2018. The final product was funded and produced in January 2019, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the designer.

The research behind Lift was experimental, focusing on analyzing human body anatomy and disabilities. The goal was to create a design that utilizes existing architectural elements to fulfill its purpose, rather than relying on unnecessary components. Through case studies and observations of user habits, Lift was developed to provide a simple shelving system that caters to different height levels and offers both hanging and standing presentation options.

Overcoming the challenge of finding the right angle for stability without sliding was a key aspect of Lift's design process. By carefully considering the structural elements and incorporating them into the overall design, the final product achieves a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Lift is a testament to the power of simplicity and adaptability in design. By minimizing materials and maximizing space utilization, it offers a unique solution for displaying books and magazines. Its recognition as the Bronze winner in the A' Furniture Design Award 2020 further solidifies its status as an outstanding and creatively ingenious design that enhances the quality of life.
